Install software

We will be installing Anaconda for the Linux operating system but the process is very similar for Windows. After the installation we will be updating anaconda itself and several Python libraries. After we finish updating our software, we have everything we need to begin analyzing data.

Step 1: Go to https://store.continuum.io/cshop/anaconda/

Step 2: Download Anaconda, select one of the following

Linux installers

After the download is complete, you should get a file named like "Anaconda-1.6.1-Linux-x86_64.sh"

Step 3: Open the Terminal and type: bash "downloaded file"

i.e:

cd Downloads
bash Anaconda-1.6.1-Linux-x86_64.sh

You should then see the following prompt:

Welcome to Anaconda 1.6.1 (by Continuum Analytics, Inc.)

In order to continue the installation process, please review the license agreement.
Please, press ENTER to continue

Continue until you finish the installation process and then close the terminal.

Step 4: Open the Terminal and update the following packages

To update Anaconda, type on the Terminal:

conda update conda
conda update anaconda

To update the python libraries, type on the Terminal:

conda update ipython
conda update pandas
conda update tornado

Step 5: open ipython

Type on the Terminal:

ipython notebook

If you received an error, please try the code below.

cd anaconda
source bin/activate ~/anaconda/
ipython notebook

Finally, go through all of the tutorials. The most important one to learn is pandas.
